Klout Changing Their Algorithm Again – Klout is Complete Krap?
By Steve Barnes
So, here we go again. Klout, the self proclaimed “Standard of Influence” is changing their algorithm again. Users have been notified that, “Klout will release updates to their score and website soon”. The official statement from Klout is sure to ruffle some feathers in the Klout community as it changes the game a mere 9 months after a huge uproar in October 2011 when many scores were flipped on their heads.
The official statement from Klout: “Soon, Klout will release an update to the scoring system that will make your score more accurate and easy to understand. Please note that you won’t be able to access your previous Score and history after this release. We will also update the website to give you greater insight into your Klout Score and to provide a fresh outlook on your influence. Stay tuned…”. Haven’t we heard this song before?
Don’t be fooled. Klout is big business with massive brands taking part in their “perks” marketing platform. How can consumers believe in them when they continue to change the game on their users? No one knows what the past algorithms included. While they hint that their new algorithm will offer “greater insight into your score and to provide a fresh outlook on your influence”, why should anyone believe them? Why would you when they have changed their much hyped system numerous times in under a year.
Let’s be honest, Nobody cares about your Klout score. The scary thing is that there are monster brands and powerful executives that have bought into the hype to hide their own social media marketing deficiencies. I’m seeing examples of it often where these powerful brands and people actually use a persons Klout score to assess their social media marketing prowess. Can you imagine a discussion between hiring executives regarding a potential candidate where they base part of their hiring decision on the candidate’s Klout score? Guess what…it happens every day and it’s scary. Let’s not forget that Klout is a GAME and nothing more. Klout is a business that has done a phenomenal job of marketing their way into the position of judge and jury of your social media existence.
“Klout scores feed a social media sickness” says author and marketing professor, Mark W. Schaefer. He’s so right. Klout can be “gamed” in many ways creating false social media heros that are in reality nothing more than social media morons. These Klout score raising tactics are sucking people into using their social media networks in counterproductive ways all for a crappy number attached to your social media handle that means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the end.
I’ve studied Klout over the last 6 months intensely as many of my clients have questions and curiosities about this “standard of influence”. I’ll tell you what I tell them…Klout is Krap. Don’t get caught up in the false dreams of being deemed a superstar social media web citizen by the ever changing definition of influence by Klout. Try something different…BE a superstar social media citizen by educating yourself on the lightning fast changing social media landscape and using it wisely. Understand WHY you are using it, USE it to offer a community generosity, and you’ll have all the social media pride you will ever need.
